February & March Wrap-Up | 2017

I’ve been posting reading wrap-ups every month for over a year now, and I somehow managed to forget about it last month! I suppose it’s not completely awful, given that I only managed to read two books in both February and March, bringing me to a total of four books, which is much more content to write about in one blog post!

Review

This is my favourite read of 2017 so far! It was wonderfully, fantastically dark and intriguing. It was filled with mystery and magic and marvel. It was the kind of book that refuses to let you put it down until its the last page is turned, for how much it grips hold of you and pulls you into its twists and turns. I am ridiculously desperate for the sequel!

The Shadow of the Wind

I really wanted to fall in love with this book, and the beginning was so promising. The writing was lyrically beautiful and the atmosphere was dark and mysterious – but almost too mysterious. I felt really confused about what was happening throughout. And when it did begin to click, I just found the revelations a bit underwhelming. I really struggled to connect with the story, and never quite felt engaged in the plot or with the characters.

March

Milk and Honey

I find rating poetry collections difficult, because there are often poems that I love, and some that I like slightly less. Some of the poems in Milk and Honey were definitely 5 stars, but there were others that I thought were just okay. The overall feel of the collection as a continuous story, however, was so moving and beautiful. Rupi Kaur’s emotion was poured onto these pages in raw, unashamed language, and I would pick up anything else that she publishes in the future.

 

Uncaged Wallflower

I absolutely loved this collection of poems. They were so uplifting, motivating and hopeful. I kept finding a new favourite every few pages. It’s not filled with necessarily emotional or deep messages, but it’s filled with hope and positivity. The poems are pretty and long enough to feel a lovely rhythm to them. I loved it!
