Adult Books for YA Readers

While I now don’t like the term “YA readers” or “adult readers” or “romance readers” or any other category that suggests a person is only a reader of one type of book, I viewed these as very separate things when I was struggling to branch out of reading YA as a teen. I found it difficult finding adult books that were accessible, enjoyable and relatable. So for those of you perhaps struggling with the same thing, I thought I would share some of the books that helped me to branch out of YA!

Title: The Magician’s Lie

Author: Greer Macallister

Goodreads Synopsis:

Water for Elephants meets The Night Circus in The Magician’s Lie, a debut novel in which the country’s most notorious female illusionist stands accused of her husband’s murder –and she has only one night to convince a small-town policeman of her innocence.

The Amazing Arden is the most famous female illusionist of her day, renowned for her notorious trick of sawing a man in half on stage. One night in Waterloo, Iowa, with young policeman Virgil Holt watching from the audience, she swaps her trademark saw for a fire ax. Is it a new version of the illusion, or an all-too-real murder? When Arden’s husband is found lifeless beneath the stage later that night, the answer seems clear.

But when Virgil happens upon the fleeing magician and takes her into custody, she has a very different story to tell. Even handcuffed and alone, Arden is far from powerless—and what she reveals is as unbelievable as it is spellbinding. Over the course of one eerie night, Virgil must decide whether to turn Arden in or set her free… and it will take all he has to see through the smoke and mirrors.

But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Title: A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic series)

Author: V. E. Schwab

Goodreads Synopsis:

Kell is one of the last travelers–magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad King–George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered–and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London–a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

Title: The Night Circus

Within these nocturnal black-and-white striped tents awaits an utterly unique, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stare in wonderment as the tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and become deliciously tipsy from the scents of caramel and cinnamon that waft through the air.

Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves.

Title: Never Let Me Go

Author: Kazuo Ishiguro

Goodreads Synopsis:

It was a place of mercurial cliques and mysterious rules where teachers were constantly reminding their charges of how special they were. Now, years later, Kathy is a young woman. Ruth and Tommy have reentered her life, and for the first time she is beginning to look back at their shared past and understand just what it is that makes them special—and how that gift will shape the rest of their time together

Recommended For Fans Of: Coming-of-age stories, dystopians set in current times, books set in schools.

Title: Battle Royale

Author: Koushun Takami

Goodreads Synopsis:

Koushun Takami’s notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan – where it then proceeded to become a runaway bestseller – Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world. Made into a controversial hit movie of the same name, Battle Royale is already a contemporary Japanese pulp classic, now available for the first time in the English language.

Recommended For Fans Of: The Hunger Games (this is literally the Hunger Games in a more gruesome and detailed story), multiple perspectives, characters with mysterious ulterior motives, thrillers.

Title: Me Before You

Author: Jojo Moyes

Goodreads Synopsis:

Louisa Clark is an ordinary young woman living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has never been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A love story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

Recommended For Fans Of: emotional but warming stories, the hate-then-love trope, YA books like The Fault in our Stars

The only trouble is, she can’t actually afford it—not any of it. Her job writing at Successful Saving magazine not only bores her to tears, it doesn’t pay much at all. And lately Becky’s been chased by dismal letters from the bank—letters with large red sums she can’t bear to read. She tries cutting back. But none of her efforts succeeds. Her only consolation is to buy herself something . . . just a little something.

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life—and the lives of those around her—forever.

  1. I read Me Before You a while ago and really loved it! I definitely think it helped broaden my reading horizons, since I really only read YA. 2. Great list! I was unsure about some of these, but I feel better about them now!
Plus, I’m reading Wintersong, and if that book can be classified as YA, I’m not sure of anything anymore…

  3. Great list, I’ve been trying to branch into adult books for a while now but it’s hard to know where to begin definitely adding some of these to my list. The Magicians Lie sounds interesting and the cover is so pretty.

  4. I’ve only started branching out the adult books recently and started with What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. I’ve also now read Me Before You and will try your other suggestions thank you! 🤓 (I’m wary of adult books in case they’re took graphic!)

  5. Thank you for the book recs! Many of these books are already on my TBR, The Night Circus and Vicious in particular. The Shades of Magic trilogy is one of my favorite series of all times and I agree, it is perfect for YA readers because it is paced like a YA book. Also agree that Me Before You would appeal to a YA reader as well.
